First impressions count and none more so when it’s the way you look that will determine whether or not you get the job. If you are lucky enough to be spotted by a scout or have the picture you sent in on spec pulled out of a pile for closer scrutiny, you will soon find yourself wondering what to wear to an interview at a model agency.
The real key is to find something to wear that you feel fully comfortable in as this will be an enormous boost to your confidence. Although you want to show off your figure, you should also be leaving plenty to the imagination. It is important to remember that the interview will take place in an office, not a nightclub or a beach bar. You should wear something that is fully appropriate for the environment you will be entering.
The easiest way to find out what to wear to an interview is to simply ask the person who invites you along whether the agency wants to see you in a particular outfit. Some agencies will have specific requirements but most of the time you will simply be asked to go along as yourself so that they can see the ‘real’ you.
For this reason you should aim to wear an outfit that is smart yet casual. Avoid wearing anything too revealing, too brightly coloured, too heavily patterned or bearing large logos or brand names. In short, anything that makes the agency representatives focus on your clothes rather than you should be avoided at all costs.
For women a simple black dress or pair of slacks combined with a top that fits nicely but is not too tight will be ideal. It is also more than acceptable for both men and women to wear jeans to such an interview, as long as they are clean and fit well.
Choose colours for your clothes and make up that compliment your natural skin tones. Similarly, unless you are being called in because of a very specific look – say the scout was attracted to your bright green mohican – you should avoid doing anything with your hair or make up that interferes with your natural beauty.
Although your choice of clothes will be important the way you carry yourself will also be under close scrutiny. Make sure you don’t slouch when you sit, try not to fidget and maintain eye contact with whoever you are talking to. Listen carefully and answer questions as well as you can. Above all, try not to worry too much and to remember to smile.
Whatever you decide to wear, you shoes will be of paramount importance. This is not the time for style over substance: you must be extremely comfortable walking in your shoes as the agency representatives will be watching closely to see how you move. If your choice of shoes make you stumble or give you an inelegant gate, you could all too easily lose out on the opportunity of a lifetime.
